THE WAR MACHINES. Written by Ian Stuart Black. 4 episodes.
25th June - 16th July 1966.
COMPANIONS:- Dodo and introducing Ben Jackson and Polly Lopez.
Landing in London in the 20th century, the Doctor becomes aware of a
presence. Drawn to the new Post Office Tower, he and Dodo meet Professor
Brett and his invention WOTAN, which stands for Will Operating Thought
ANalogue, a super-computer. The Professor says that WOTAN knows everything
and when Dodo asks it what TARDIS stands for, it replies Time And Relative
Dimensions In Space. The Doctor is both amazed and made uneasy by WOTAN.
Dodo meets the Professors' assistant Polly and the Doctor suggests that
she spends some time with her and relaxes a little. They both go to a club
where they meet Ben, a young sailor.
WOTAN meanwhile has begun assembling a group of electronically hypnotised
men who construct War Machines to assist it in destroying the population of
London. WOTAN wants to rule but the Doctor captures one of the Machines and
re-programs it to destroy WOTAN.
Dodo decides to stay on Earth and Ben and Polly enter the TARDIS to
return something to the Doctor. The TARDIS takes off.
This story was aimed at the teenage market for the first time after
research identified a growing, older audience. The very attractive Polly
was also a "hook" for the show.
Ian Stuart Black's script was based on ideas by Pat Dunlap and Dr Kit
Pedler, who would soon introduce a new and popular enemy for the Doctor to
fight.
